Mathieu Matégot

Matégot (1910 – 2001) was born in Tapio-Sully, Hungary. He studied in Budapest at the School of Fine Arts and in the Jaschik Academy, where he initiated activity as a theatre set decorator. He moved to France in 1931, acquiring French nationality. In 1939 he became interested in tapestry, producing several works at the workshops of Tabard and Pinton, as in the Manufacture Nationale des Gobelins. By this time he produces monumental tapestries commissioned by the French government and other entities, for public spaces. His work is held at the National Library of Australia, in Canberra, in the International Wool Secretariat, in London, and in the International Monetary Fund, in Washington. His collaboration with Portalegre’s Tapestry began in 1964. He has had relevant activity in the area of design, being part of the collection of the Decorative Arts Museum in Paris and the Georges Pompidou Centre, among others.
