António Dacosta

António DaCosta (1914 – 1990) was born in Angra do Heroísmo, Azores. He moved to Lisbon in 1938 to study painting at the School of Fine Arts. In 1947, he moved to Paris, with a scholarship from the French Government, where he stayed until his death, in 1990. An important name in the Portuguere surrealism, DaCosta was granted the Amadeu Souza-Cadoso Prize, in 1942 and the Fine Arts National Award, in 1984. The Gulbenkian Foundation held a retrospective of his work, in 1988. DaCosta was also a poet. He began his collaboration with the Portalegre’s tapestry in 1990.
